It was never something I had planned or even thought about doing before last year when I started working at [Substack](https://substack.com/). After getting into technical writing there I found myself reading books like [On Writing Well](https://www.amazon.com/On-Writing-Well-Classic-Guide/dp/0060891548), [Elements Of Style](https://www.amazon.com/Elements-Style-Fourth-Edition-Strunk/dp/020530902X) (and its sequel [The Sense Of Style](https://www.amazon.com/Sense-Style-Rhetoric-Stylish-Writing/dp/0674729413)). I also started reading some fiction books by authors who had sold books before (because that seemed like good research), like George R.R Martin ([Fire & Blood](https://www.amazon.com/Fire-Blood-House-Targaryen-ebook/dp/B01F7DRE72), [A Game Of Thrones](https://www.amazon.com/Game-Thrones-Joffrey-Survival-Guide/dp/1611850394)), Neil Gaiman ([American Gods](https://www.amazon.com/American-Gods-Neil-Gaiman/dp/0060838659)), Brandon Sanderson ([Mistborn](https://www.amazon.com/Mistborn-Alloy-Trilogy-Novel/dp/0765311734)), etc. The thing about these books was that they were so well-written! They were not only engaging but also so easy to read! I found myself getting immersed into those worlds because it was just so effortless! So I decided I wanted to write something like that too. It took me almost two years from then till now (May-November) but I did it! And I am very happy about it. It all started last year when I got invited by my friend [Lukas Reineke](https://twitter.com/lukas_reineke) who is now my editor at [Manning Publications](https://manning.com/) (the publisher) ,to write about JavaScript performance optimization techniques using Chrome DevTools. I had never written anything before then except blog posts so this was exciting! But also scary because it was so big compared to anything else I had done. I spent about three months working on it every day after work till late at night just trying different things out in Chrome DevTools trying figure out how everything works together. Then came time when Lukas said he would like me write another book about React.js which would use DevTools as one way of inspecting React apps performance wise. This felt like too much work but also something I wanted really badly so I said yes! Now comes another interesting thing: How do you write something so big? Do you just sit down every day after work till late at night like before? The answer turned out to be no! I ended up doing something completely different: 1. **Write every morning** — This was huge! I wrote every morning before work without fail. 1. **Write every day** — I wrote something every single day even if it was only one sentence. 1. **Timebox everything** — I gave myself deadlines all over again. 1. **Talk about what you're doing** — Whenever possible tell people about what you're doing because it helps you stay accountable. 1. **Have fun** — Writing should be fun! If it isn't then something is wrong. 1. **Don't give up** — Even when things get hard keep going! And guess what? It worked! I wrote my second book ([React Performance Patterns](https://www.manning.com/books/react-performance-patterns)) in about six months which is still pretty fast considering how much time it takes most people. It wasn't easy though! There were many times when I wanted just give up because things weren't going well or because someone told me my ideas weren't good enough but somehow managed not do so thanks largely due having people around me who believed me even when things looked bleak which made all difference. If you want write your own book then don't wait till everything looks perfect or until someone tells you "you're ready" because chances are nothing ever will! Just start now by doing one thing every day towards achieving your goal no matter how small it may seem at first glance then build upon those successes over time till eventually you reach where ever you want go! And remember: Have fun along way :) [Buy my book](https://www.manning.com/books/react-performance-patterns) if you want :) <|repo_name|>sudhanva/sudhanva.github.io<|file_sep|>/_posts/2020-02-20-how-to-start-a-blog.md --- layout: post title: How To Start A Blog --- *This post was written as part of my [Adventures In Freelancing](/adventures-in-freelancing/) series.* I've been thinking about starting a blog since forever but never really got around doing it till now.
