[0]: Gamescom Report Redux [1]: As rock music immortal Mick Jagger once sang, “You can’t always get what you want.” Okay yes, he sang it with Phil Spector’s Wall of Sound under his belt instead of festivalgoers clamoring for your video game expo’s attention — and people chanting “We want Kinect!” instead of “Satisfaction” — but roughly speaking implications about personal disappointment notwithstanding I think he’s got a point. [2]: More precisely, he’s got a point when it comes to Gamescom. It’s something I wrote last year but which bears repeating now that this year’s Gamescom is behind us: “Gamescom is a choice.” Journalists get no say in how they’re going to cover Gamescom, only how much time they choose to devote towards it each year. The sheer size of Gamescom makes it near impossible for any one individual or media outlet to see everything it may deem worth seeing — this year alone we covered almost 30 announced games (not including numerous downloadable demos as DLC) out of hundreds. Some outlets will cover just a handful of things at Gamescom while other outlets will somehow manage to cover almost everything — Kraftonid magazine attempting to cover over one hundred Gamescom games is one such example. [3]: It’s also worth noting that Gamescom is a choice when it comes to gaming as a whole. [4]: The expansion of public interest in all things games has never been greater — gaming has certainly grown from those arcade cabinets my grandfather once took me too when I was a kid — but the value of gaming hasn’t grown at all. Video games are now giant global artform where once they were an entertainment consideration exclusive to children. The general population may nowadays be cognizant of video games as an artform the way they’d consider movies but they very rarely invest time in understanding it as one — instead they’ll squander it on hashtag tribulations or some such example. [5]: “Gamers” themselves are increasingly less invested in “gaming” — they’re much more likely to spend time trawling through lists of games journalism they’re most likely forgiving before spending any time with new games at all if they’re lucky — taking gaming personally as much as they do taking art personally nowadays — as much as they’d pick apart a movie review for an Oscar contender rather than enjoying it for what it is. It’s hard enough trying to see gamers as grown adults who’ve grown assiduously past gaming’s maturity gate into adulthood themselves since none of them ever want to actually grow up and accept gaming as an artform worth their time — they’d much rather seethe when it doesn’t meet the expectations earned by “their” artform. [6]: Nowhere is this clearer than when it comes to E3 last year wherein enthusiasts took delight at holding Microsoft’s FOMO baiting press conference against them — maybe if Microsoft management had stopped trying to be something they’re not it wouldn’t have happened but they didn’t so here we are — or when bigger gaming media outlets pine away in faithful year-after-year disillusionment at Nintendo’s E3 press conferences. [7]: Both examples are similar: gaming media outlets thinking they know what “gamers” want — why else would they keep lining up expecting different Nintendo press conferences every year if not? — but not even coming close since gamers want something they’re not going to get even if they like Nintendo because Nintendo are Nintendo in no uncertain terms from release-to-release. Any media outlets concerned about pleasing so-called “gamers” will probably read this article incredulously; what they really care about doing is pleasing themselves because nobody else is going to do the job — lesser media outlets can pretend “They’re gamers like us!” as much as they want but they’re not getting another job any time soon since no network programming block would touch them with a ten foot pole if they did get another job. [8]: If anything Nintendo knows better than anyone else that gamers simply want whatever video games they’re going to get when they’re going to get them regardless of whether or not “gamers” think they’re good enough — see too how so many major releases are met positively nowadays despite being NFOOM’d their way into players’ minds because Nintendo knows that people want video games of all shapes and sizes regardless of whether they’re new or old; why else would they still buy Mario games if they weren’t going to enjoy them? It’s really not that gamers want something Nintendo aren’t advertising than they just want video games from Nintendo because Nintendo owe them video games no matter what happens elsewhere in the industry — when Kodak finally went bankrupt they never went back into film after going digital. [9]: Of course E3 was just Windows Alpha-baiting from Microsoft — albeit less so this year since Square Enix has gone back onto Nintendo platforms — but Gamescom was its own thing altogether; namely Kraftonidmagazine.com dealing with Gamescom this year rather than relying upon third party media outlets alone which managed my workflow so much better than having to deal with multiple outlets myself whilst trying my best not to add another streaming potential avenue like IGN or Kotaku UK onto the pile of outlets I was dealing with already on top of my own site. [10]: This isn’t meant as a diss; I’m just a lone writer covering E3 type gaming events instead of being part of a larger Gamescom-style team… [11]: We also received fewer games at Gamescom this year than last year which helped too; last year we hit more than one hundred games at one point — perhaps even two hundred but I lost count ultimately — whereas this year we hit sixty at one point but weren’t quite sure whether or not we were going to hit that number eventually since so many games cropped up post-Gamescom meaning we really don’t know what our final tally was likely to be come the end of it all. [12]: Despite me not knowing how many games we were covering this year I did know what I wanted from Gamescom at least, albeit an impossibility based upon past experiences: I wanted those few dozen news stories that I missed last year due Life in Real Time scheduling conflicts but partook in after so much research went into them it was like me being there regardless because I was virtually there through researching them after I’d left Gamescom yet still knowing my attention was already
