--- So I saw *The Hobbit* trilogy again last night. It's not a bad movie series (though it does feel long), but it doesn't stand up to *The Lord of The Rings* trilogy. There's just something about *The Lord of The Rings* that feels more epic. The first *Hobbit* movie felt like it was trying too hard sometimes (e.g., when they show Gandalf's past) but it did get better as it went along. I also don't understand why they had three movies instead of two (or one). I mean they could have easily fit *An Unexpected Journey* into one movie (and it would have been much better) then *The Desolation Of Smaug* would have been a great second movie. And then they could have split *The Battle Of The Five Armies* into two parts. But nope...they had three movies instead. <|file_sep|>---

title: D&D Homebrew - Rune Magic
description: "Rune Magic - An alternative magic system"
category: dnd
tags: [homebrew]
--- ## Description This homebrew magic system uses runes as magical items instead of spells. Runes are magical symbols engraved into metal or stone that can be used by anyone that knows how to use them. ## Runes ### Runes are purchased using GPs Runes cost between .5GP - XGP where X depends on how powerful you want your rune to be. For example: 1) .5GP - A rune that causes minor harm or has minor effects (e.g., +1 AC) X) XGP - A rune that causes major harm or has major effects (e.g., +5 AC) ### Runes are engraved into metal or stone Runes must be engraved into metal or stone (or some other material). This means you can't just draw them onto paper. You can use regular engraving tools or you can use magic engraving tools (which cost more). ### Runes are used as weapons or armor Runes are attached onto weapons or armor so they can be used. For example: A +1 AC rune would be attached onto someone's shield. A +1D4 damage rune would be attached onto someone's sword. ### Runes last forever Once you've engraved a rune onto something it lasts forever. So if you attach a rune onto your sword you'll always have it unless you remove it or break your sword. ### Runes can be removed You can remove runes from weapons/armor if you want. This costs time (and maybe money) depending on how difficult it is to remove them. For example: Removing a rune from metal might take an hour (and maybe some money). Removing a rune from stone might take several hours (and maybe more money). ### Runes can be re-used If you remove a rune from something you can attach it onto something else later if you want. ### Runes don't require concentration Since runes are attached onto weapons/armor they don't require concentration like spells do. This means you can use them while fighting/running/etc without worrying about losing them. ### Runes don't require verbal components Since runes are attached onto weapons/armor they don't require verbal components like spells do either. This means you don't need to say anything when using them which is nice if your character isn't good at speaking (e.g., Dwarves). ### Runes don't require somatic components Since runes are attached onto weapons/armor they don't require somatic components like spells do either either which means you don't need any special hand gestures when using them which makes them easier than spells since not everyone knows how those work anyway especially if your character isn't good at casting spells (e.g., Halflings). ## Advantages Of Rune Magic Over Spell Magic ### Rune magic is cheaper than spell magic Since runes cost less than spells they're cheaper than spell magic which makes them more accessible since not everyone has enough money/gold pieces etc..to buy lots of expensive spells all at once especially if they're new characters etc... ### Rune magic doesn't require concentration/spells/verbal/somatic components/etc... As mentioned above since runes don't require concentration/spells/verbal/somatic components/etc...they're easier than spell magic which makes them better than spell magic since not everyone knows how those work anyway especially if your character isn't good at casting spells etc... ### Rune magic doesn't require memorization/research/etc... Since runes don't require memorization/research/etc...they're easier than spell magic which makes them better than spell magic since not everyone knows how those work anyway especially if your character isn't good at casting spells etc... ## Disadvantages Of Rune Magic Over Spell Magic ### Rune magic takes longer than spell casting time Since runes take longer than spell casting time they're slower than spell magic which makes them worse than spell magic since not everyone has enough time/money etc...to wait around while their characters are busy engraving/runes etc...especially if they're new characters etc... ### Rune magic requires tools/materials/etc... Since runes require tools/materials/etc...they're harder than spell magic which makes them worse than spell magic since not everyone knows how those work anyway especially if your character isn't good at casting spells etc... ## Conclusion Overall I think rune magic is pretty cool since it's cheaper/easier/faster/etc...than spell magic which makes it better than spell magic since not everyone knows how those work anyway especially if your character isn't good at casting spells etc... <|repo_name|>mkoenig/mkoenig.github.io<|file_sep|>/_posts/2016-06-09-the-matrix.md

--- So I just saw *The Matrix* again today. It's still pretty amazing after all these years! I think what I love most about this movie is how it combines philosophy with action/adventure/sci-fi elements into one seamless package! There are so many interesting themes explored here such as reality vs illusion; free will vs determinism; choice vs fate; mind over matter; etc.. Plus there are some awesome fight scenes & special effects! All-in-all this movie remains one-of-a-kind even after all these years! <|repo_name|>mkoenig/mkoenig.github.io<|file_sep|>/_posts/2016-04-20-mechanized-necromancy.md
