Here is a paragraph:
[An article by Paolo Villani –]
No matter how old we are now at this early (or rather late) hour of mankind’s evolution, we all have spent much time in our life as children learning languages.
In my own case I don’t even remember when exactly I have started learning French and Italian at school but I do remember when I first (as a 10 year-old child) picked up German: I slept like a baby that night and I could speak it fluently when I woke up! I know, this story sounds like a fairy tale but what is no fairy tale at all is how children learn a language way more easily than adults usually do. When we study any language after having passed childhood we usually try to identify words that are similar in other languages we already know (cognates) or base ourselves on our own existing vocabulary (translation) or we use grammar rules of our native language (transposition) to learn differently structured foreign languages (e.g., English vs German).
I like to think that we learn foreign languages in exactly the same way as we learn our native language: we acquire new vocabulary through context (e.g., through reading books or everyday conversation out there) and we gradually learn grammar through practice absorption (e.g., guess-style learning) that you and only you can do when your brain allows you to totally immerse yourself into language input without caring about understanding every word you come across.
I recall how my mother tried to teach me Italian grammar when I was seven years old by offering short stories followed by exercises on conjugating verbs according to mood (indicative vs subjunctive) then fashioning sentences using adjectives described by gender (masculine vs feminine) etc. etc. You get the idea! And what did I do? I learned all these exercises by heart until my final exams in elementary school even though not only I didn’t understand the purpose of most of those conjugation drills but I also didn’t perceive any difference between masculine vs feminine adjectives – as if nouns didn’t carry gender in other languages like French or Spanish!
Then there was a time when I learned Spanish at school but I found it easier than Italian simply because it’s less complicated. It looks like Italian has complex grammatical rules because it has Latin origins but Spanish should have had them too as it originally was derived from Latin as well! I finally discovered that nouns have gender also in Spanish simply because they end either with “O” (masculine) or “A” (feminine), e.g., “niño”/ “niña” (boy/ girl), “libro”/ “t
